Antique Persian 90 Sterling Silver Figural Open Work Serving Bowl 20th Century

Early 20th century large serving bowl with a figural open work design set in solid 937 silver.
Stunning and spectacular, this incredibly detailed serving bowl was crafted entirely by hand. The impeccable artisanal construction is a testament to the arduous manual labor required to craft such an ornate, large-format object. Each figure was individually molded, shaped and soldered by hand in a cohesive and form-fitting pattern that left no margin for error. Persian silver rarely contains open work styling, and examples of this size typically belonged to wealthier members of society.

Featuring a figural design throughout the entire body, fantastic mythological creatures, horned beasts and Persian military soldiers are organized in patterned ascending tiers. Combat and war are the theme of this piece. Depictions of soldiers armed with spears and shields marching, Persian ibex goat at battle, and the fearsome mythological creatures Shirzad and Simurgh dominate the body of the work. Twisted silver rope provides texture and support, while floral accents decoratively divide the tiers. Four statues of the god Shirzad act as feet, while huma birds surrounded by six horned bulls compose the finial.

Exceptional antique condition with original patina present from decades of storage. There are no visible dings, dents or repairs to be found anywhere on the silver. The open work relief is sharp, very visible and beautiful to behold. All figural accents and feet are present, and the lid fits snugly above the bowl. Interior glass liner is included with no damage to note. Fully hallmarked on the exterior of both the lid and bowl. A remarkable and historical work of art; this piece could be a centerpiece for the serious collector, or an exhibit in the permanent collection of a museum.
